233 High Street
RESTORATION AND ADJOINING NEW BUILD DEVELOPMENT
The site lies within a conservation area in the historic settlement of Rochester. The challenge was to design a scheme that respected the existing building that adjoined and surrounded the site yet, maximise the development potential of its superb urban location.
BHD Architects were commissioned by Bellway Homes to obtain the planning consent and Conservation Area consent. This included discussions with Medway Council and their Conservation Design Panel. Construction work was completed in October 2008. The approved scheme incorporated 68 one and two bedroom flats together, with three retail units fronting the high street. Eight of the flats are contained within the retained Victorian building.
